Oweninny Wind Farm Trip April 2026

Today our students enjoyed an inspiring and educational trip to the Oweninny Visitor Centre in North Mayo. We began the day with a guided tour led by Declan, a physics expert, who gave us fascinating insights into the importance of the wind farm, Ireland’s largest, and explained the role of wind, solar, and hydropower across Mayo. Students learned about the construction and transportation of the wind turbines before taking part in fun, hands-on experiments demonstrating wind energy in action. After exploring the centre’s engaging interactive exhibits—which highlight renewable energy, climate change, local ecology, and the area’s rich social and industrial history—we headed out to see the turbines up close. Standing beneath one was an unforgettable experience, and we were all amazed by its sheer size and scale.
